Hey there! I'm a dietician...you chose great books! I would humbly suggest also considering an exercise plan. One that really works (if you really follow the plan) is Body for Life. I have absolutely no connection whatsoever to the folks that publish the book, but I know it is solid and it works! Good luck to you! :)

Hey Leo... It's great that you are working on your health. I've lose 110 LBS since February of this year! And, I feel great. I did it with this type of diet: http://www.oneweighsystem.com/ using the OptiFast diet. It worked for me. http://watchwilllose.com is my weight loss site---but it's not up to date. <soon> Here are some before and after shots: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/album.php?aid=90612&id=555272156

Cheers,
Will

"You can also listen to this book, from the wonderful folks over at audible.com. LOL :D

I'm joining 24 Hour Fitness really soon, but then I understand I have to actually GO there?

Leo, good luck with losing weight. I lost 30 lbs working with a great personal trainer, John Hacker. I liked his approach so much that we've
made 3 iPhone fitness apps together, with more in the queue. If you get a chance, search for Coach Hacker on the App Store - check out the Geek Workout!

If anyone has lost weight, please tweet me because I think I've found it and I'll gladly send it back.

Good Luck Leo,
I lost 40 pounds with Dr. Fuhrman. The great thing about his plan is that it works and it is healthy! The first two weeks are pretty tough, you will likely get a little light headed, and have headaches, but DON'T GIVE UP! The weight will start to fall off soon after the second week. After the 6th week you will feel like Leo Decaprio!

Leo - here's the secret, keep your carbs to 100 g. per day, spread out evenly into 3-5 small meals. I did this after reading zillions of books, many same as you've got here after a high blood sugar test. Now 6 months later my blood sugar is normal and I've lost about 60 lbs. Even the doctor asks me what I was doing. The low intake of sugar (carbs turn to sugar glucose in your blood) creates a way for your body to stop cravings and shed the extra poundage.
Also, a good way to increase these results is to walk, yes, simply a quick walk of more than 20 min. per day will provide even more kick to your body realizing that it is going to change!
Good luck.

I second the comment about Body for Life. It's about about more than losing weight. It's body, mind, and spiritual transformation. They have a great community for support too at www.transformation.com. "Strength For Life" by Shawn Phillips is also an excellent book. The Phillips brothers know their stuff and can help you get in the best shape of your life!
Kathy
Leo, I'd check out Dr. Monte's podcast Fitness Rocks for some advice. I've done Body for Life, had some results but not fantastic. I've gone to a more KISS method, keep it simple stupid. Just watching calories going in and out. Getting the weekly recommend cardio, and throwing in a few days of weight lifting to build some extra muscle mass to burn more calories. Really this subject is far to vast to cover in a post.

First the exercise ball, and now the warning from your Doc?!

Amy D and Kathy are absolutely right about exercise. If you get yourself moving, you'll probably find the rest follows. And – ta da – all you need is my amazing iPhone / iPod App! Honestly :-)

It's two dollars, and currently, all the money goes to "AIDS Run & Walk Chicago"! Check it out at http://itunes.com/apps/getrunning.

>

It's not that crazy Leo – you can do it, and you wont just get thin, you'll feel brilliant too :-)

Benjohn Barnes
Make that http://itunes.com/apps/getrunning

Without the "." in it :-)

Hi Leo. Remember that slow and steady wins the race. Avoid fad diets, use a dietician, and develop healthy habits and the weight will follow naturally.

Track your calories. You can't manage what you don't know. Know what you're eating, monitor and manage intake. If you're not successful you will at least know where you failed.
Chris "Walker" Sterns
Also have a read of the The Abs Diet Book. A great variety of meals. Simple-to-do-at-home exercises too. No affiliation with them, just my 2 penneth worth :)

Oh, and get out the bike too of course :)

Adrian
I second what Chris "Walker" Sterns said: Keeping calories eaten lower (but not *too much* lower) than calories burned is the way to go, regardless of specific approach. I've had great luck with myfooddiary.com for calorie tracking, but I'm sure other similar services are also worth a look.
Gabe
Okay, Leo. Before you start anything, I recommend listening to In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan. It's unabridged and on Audible.
Chris
Good luck Leo! You can do it. Don't project too far into the future- take each day (each meal) as it comes.
AustinPrice
Leo, go for it! Been cruising at 153 lbs for last three years. Worth the effort. http://daniels-mara.com/eating/

"The Perricone Weight-Loss Diet" is missing from your picture. This guy started trying to treat wrinkles, found brain cells to be similar to skin cells and developed a whole set of antioxidant and nutritional recommendations to not only loose the weight, but to feel more lucid and healthier. http://www.perriconemd.com/category/perricone+lifestyle/3-day+facelift.do <==this is the first step. Good luck!!!
Emilio
As a trainer for the past 8 years, I can't tell you how important exercise is. Diet, yes, very important. Exercise trains your body to function properly under stress. Lower blood pressure, better cholesterol, better mood, it goes on and on! Take care of your body! You only get one!
joeketterling
Try the food tracker at Livestrong.com called the Daily Plate. It's free, relatively fast, and easy to use. It helps you track calories, fat, carbs, and exercise all in one location. I really like it, and it's raised my awareness on all the "stupid" calories I was consuming.
Phil Calvin
Good going, Leo.

No advice from me...you'll find your own way by making your own journey.

Leo, get a treadmill instead of your ball. Research has shown that very modest but continuous activity is the best exercise (twitching works too, but you don't seem to be that kind of person).
Love your shows (Twit, Macbreak)!

Download Lost It! for the iPhone - it is a free app that makes this stuff easy. I've lost 12 pounds in the past 10 days thanks to the app.
